I'm Curious!

Question for my fellow lovers of all things postal: how do you open your letters?

For example, do you have a letter opener?  Do you open the top or the side?

Before opening a beautiful envelope there is a moment of hesitation for me.  I don't want to ruin it!  But, alas, it must be opened.  Plus, I'm eager to know what's inside!

  1. I know this isn't the best way to do it, but I open mine with scissors. I'll either cut along the line of the seal or if I can feel that the paper inside is smaller than the envelope than I make a thin snip across the top.

I'm a total klutz when it comes to letter openers. I always manage to tear the envelope.

  2. After working with mail, and having to open hundreds of envelopes a day by hand with a letter opener, it's become second nature to me to open envelopes with a letter opener. I use the Universal brand letter opener, as it has proven to be the best option. It cuts through heavy card stock and cardboard with no problems, and they're relatively inexpensive to replace if you should break the prong. Of course, these things are a personal taste item - what works for me wont work for the next person.

I always open the top of the envelope as a force of habit. I am always careful of the contents, but accidents will happen from time to time.

  3. I suppose I just usually tear them open. I think I try to open them gently so as not to damage the art work that's often on them. But, sometimes the envelopes are covered in so much tape, it's difficult to get them open. I have a letter opener somewhere, but I rarely use it. Maybe I should track it down and try it out again.

  4. Some envelopes, it'll be easier to get into Fort Knox than the envelope with all that tape! I try to remove as much tape as I can, and as soon as I get a tape free area on the flap, I will use my finger, or scissors to open the letter.

  5. I use an oval letter opener I got from Staples a while ago (it reminds me of a whale). It has a hook or something that you can catch a corner with and guide it to the blade. Hard to describe...I found it one the Staples website if that helps: http://www.staplespromotionalproducts.com/ProductDetail.aspx?id=1434&EXID=GDF_BING_800JY&gdftrk=gdfV23788_a_7c1813_a_7c7892_a_7c1434#description

  6. Hi, Anne! :D Hi! Thank you so much for dropping by!

When I get a letter, sometimes I get so desperate that I open it right after I take it out from my mailbox, haha. If I can tell there some space on one side, I rip that side. If it's a hand made envelope, though, I always open it with scissors or an X-axcto knife. Btw, I've always wanted a neat letter opener :p.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend! ;D

  7. Depends really. Most times it's with a letter opener, I have several but my favorite is one with a wooden handle. If I'd like to preserve the envelope because it's extra special I usually slice off a sliver of the side. I like these mail questions :)
